Balancing Rock is inspired by a need to connect with nature by placing a personal mark on it. The artist has noted the prevalence of this genre of graffiti on naturally occurring balancing rocks. Awed by the phenomenon, the passerby succumbs to a desire to make a lasting contribution to a form created by glaciers, wind and water. For this installation, the artist has carefully assembled a balancing feat that, in nature, could take thousands of years to construct. On it, she has etched a replica of a peace sign and the word “love” that were carved into the shingles of her childhood home by the previous owners.
