Stephanie Lempert
The Scope of Language, 2006
Steel, aluminum, plexiglas, text
57 x 30 x 2 6
Special thanks: Polo Dobkin, Josh Lempert, Bill Prichett
These observation scopes provide fixed views of the East River and the
Manhattan skyline in which the water is overlaid with letters from the
many alphabets that are used in the over 167 languages of New York City.
Addressing issues of immigration, assimilation and the remarkable diversity
of this City, the artist has made the East River a symbol of multilingual
communication.
