Exhibition: THE SOCRATES ANNUAL, 2017
Known but to God: The Dug Up, Dissected, and Disposed for the Sake of Medicine, 2017
Glass, silicone, steel, epoxy putty, pearls,
Swarovski crystals, and whiskey
These hanging glass sculptures reference show
globes, early 20th century symbolic markers for
pharmacies and apothecaries, typically hung in
the window and filled with colored liquid. Their
opulent exteriors belie abject contents: silicone body
fragments floating in whiskey, alluding to the appalling
history of medical violence inflicted upon black bodies.
Dimensions vary: 12-15 x 8 x 8 inches each
Image: Doreen Garner, "Not only had Sims to close the natural openings in the ravaged vaginal tissues; he had to make the edges of these openings knit together. He opted to abrade or "scarify" the edges of the vaginal tears every time he attempted to repair an opening. He then closed them with sutures and saw them become infected and reopen, painfully, every time", Detail shot, Silicone, Hair Weave, Swarovski Crystals, Pearls, Polyester Fiber, Wire, Discarded Wedding Dress, 45x70x12 inches, 2016.
