    Steel Bed, 1993

    Steel, slate, cement, shale

    12' x 4' x 3.3'

My sculptures are often low topographical configurations, built close to the ground. They refer back to the earth, less as objects, existing on the periphery. They serve as frames of reference, armatures of sorts, which rely upon human experience and emotions to be completely realized. Steel Bed is constructed of slate, a fragile material. Thin leaves of slate are cut and laminated together in semi-circular sections. These components are positioned up-ended, in a row. Their precarious placement stresses the transient nature of the sculpture. The outer steel enclosure forms a protective screen or barrier that obscures the material it contains, emphasizing certain detachment.
