SUMMER OUTDOOR ARTMAKING WORKSHOPS

These free workshops offer diverse groups of children from neighborhood youth agencies, community groups, summer schools and day camps the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities inspired by exhibitions at the Park. Taught by exhibiting artists, children learn fundamental and contemporary artmaking techniques. Artists run two sessions of their workshop each day of the week. Groups can sign up for a single workshop or a combination of weekly workshops. Registration and scheduling will be on a first come, first served basis. SOAW 2010 Dates

July 6-9: Flying Dog Kite Workshop with Mads Linnerup
Have you ever seen a dog fly? Using colorful paper and fabric, learn to design and paint a kite to look like a dog and then fly it in the Park.

July 12-16: Weaving Superstars with Anna Craycroft
Using a variety of recycled soft materials, future weaving experts create colorful geometric patterns from images or by improvising from their imaginations. Get ready to learn the patience and careful observation that weaving requires.

July 19-23: Build A Skyscraper with Samara Kupferberg
Children create fantastic towers or replicate the building they live in by using recycled materials such as cardboard, fabric, buttons, tinfoil, glitter, and more. The group will put their buildings together to create a glamorous skyline. Each group will end up with a totally unique city.

July 26-30: Colossal Bugs with Martin Basher
Make an incredibly colorful imaginary insect using a wide range of sculptural and painting materials. With two legs or twenty, a dozen eyes or just one, participants will be able to design their own personalized bugs. They will look great on a windowsill or hanging from a lampshade!

August 2-6: Clay Magic with Chakaia Booker
Students learn ceramic techniques such as coiling, slabing, and draping to transform their clay designs into wonderful sculptural works of art and objects of inspiration.

August 9-13: Site Winding with Carissa Carman
A collaborative sculptural tent-building workshop using recycled materials to build 3-D spaces.

August 16-20: Fallen Leaf Mobiles with Free Style Arts Association
Using materials found in the Park, laminate fallen leaves with contact paper or packing tape and hang them from various sticks, balancing them to make a hanging mobile to take home.
