The Puddles Project

Since 2005, Socrates Sculpture Park and P.S. 122Q have collaborated to improve student's enjoyment and understanding of science and art by examining the ways that the two disciplines could be used to examine the forms, anatomy, and sources of waterborne life. Over a four-week program, the students participate in hands-on artmaking projects with Socrates artists, while studying the East River and Long Island Sound estuary system at the Hallets Cove waterfront. The students work collaboratively across grade levels to collect and prepare water samples for chemical and microscopic analyses, and represent the life they see under the microscope through drawing, sculpture and printmaking.

Different elements are incorporated into the project each year, to build on previous lessons and to address timely themes. In 2008, the students participated in a Buoy Communication Project, where they each designed a buoy to communicate a personal message to waterside onlookers.

Puddles Project is generously supported by ConEdison.

Earth Day

Socrates Sculpture Park, Plant Specialists, City Parks Foundation, Partnerships for Parks, and The Baccalaureate School for Global Education's students and teachers celebrate Earth Day with hands-on training and workshops for students to learn specialized landscaping techniques- including weeding, planting and pruning skills- culminating in the planting of a community vegetable garden in the Park.

Earth Day is generously supported by Plant Specialists.
