Whatever Floats Your Boat

Saturday May 7 | 12 – 3 PM

Whatever Floats Your Boat with Ian Gerson
in collaboration with Long Island City Community Boathouse

A Socrates Classic! We’ll make miniature toy boats and rafts from a variety of materials and set them to sail. While we learn about the local water quality and history of New York City’s waterfronts, we will experiment with creating our own floatable sculptures equipped with wind-up propellers, sails, and other methods to make them move. We’ll test our boats in a kiddie pool before a group launch at near-by Socrates Sculpture Park Beach at Hallets Cove.

Saturday Sculpture Workshops are offered to kids, ages 5-13, and their families. Workshops take place every Saturday from May 9 – September 26; they are free and offered in the park’s education area on a drop-in basis. Participants work with a different artist each Saturday, exploring innovative art mediums and a variety of subject matter.

Please note: If arriving in a group of 10 or more, please contact us the week prior to your visit by calling 718.956.1819.
