Embrace of the Serpent (Colombia)

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 24, 2016 | Pre-screening performance begins at 7PM

Embrace of the Serpent (Colombia)
Directed by Ciro Guerra; 2015, 125 mins.

Set in the Colombian Amazon, the Oscar-nominated EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT tells the story of a shaman encountering two Western explorers who search for rare botanical species in this most remote and lush of South American jungles. The shaman who guides both men, Karamakate, is no naif – he’s tough-minded and astute about the ravages brought by the white man’s colonialism, his missionaries and rapacious rubber industry. Based on the diaries of two Westerners who travelled in the region, one in 1909, the other 30 years later. “Majestic, spellbinding…a fantastical mixture of myth and historical reality, (shattering) lingering illusions of first-world culture as more advanced than any other, except technologically.”                –  Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Programmed by Film Forum.

Join us at 7PM for South American flavors from La Carreta Paisa and music from BullA en el Barrio. The film will begin at sundown.
