The Silence Before Bach (Spain)

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 9, 2017 | Pre-screening performance begins at 7PM, Film begins at sundown

The Silence Before Bach (Spain)
Directed by Pere Portabella; 2007, 102 mins.

This screening was recommended in this week’s New Yorker by Richard Brody, who wrote, “Pere Portabella’s 2007 film brings Bach’s music to life with a dazzling blend of drama, documentary, and quasi-surrealist whimsy.”

Details: This fascinating, charming hybrid of documentary and drama from Spain’s legendary Surrealist, circles the theme of the transformational power of great music. The screen is filled with a subway car of passionate cello-playing musicians; then we’re accompanying a guide who gives tours of Leipzig dressed in full Bach regalia; followed by Mendelssohn’s discovery of sheet music for the “St. Matthew Passion” used as wrapping paper for a chunk of raw meat. By turns funny and serious, poignant, sexy, and refreshing – a nearly unclassifiable film, filled with indelible imagery.

Enjoy a pre-screening performance of flamenco dance, music and poetry from Numina Dance Theater and dine on amazing paella from food vendor In Patella.
