WEDNESDAY JULY 6, 2016 |   Pre-screening performance begins at 7PM, Film begins at dusk

The African Queen (U.S.A.)
(Copyright United Artists)
Directed by John Huston; 1951, 105 mins.

Katherine Hepburn is a prim missionary in East Africa during World War I, hitching a ride on the eponymous, rundown riverboat operated by a gin-sodden Humphrey Bogart – who finds she’s got a formidable agenda: whip up a few homemade torpedoes to get revenge on a German gunboat, with only that hair-raising ride down the rapids, the enemy fort, and Deutsch officer Theodore Bikel’s noose in the way. Directed with a flair for comedy and an attention to the richness of African wildlife by John Huston and shot on location (with legendary difficulty) in the Belgian Congo and Uganda by Technicolor specialist par excellence Jack Cardiff (THE RED SHOES). “A comedy, a love story, and a tale of adventure, and one of the most charming and entertaining movies ever made.” – Pauline Kael, The New Yorker
