Socrates Sculpture Park is a community engaged New York City waterfront park dedicated to supporting artists in the production and presentation of public art.

Socrates Through Time
An Archive & Oral History
to Celebrate our 40 Years
Socrates is making its institutional knowledge publicly accessible for the first time through a major investment in its forty-year-old archive. This work is complemented by an oral history project that expands and complicates its historical record, conducted with neighbors and alumni artists. Driven not only by a desire to preserve our past, this work expands and deepens its telling, foregrounding multiple voices and perspectives that are rooted in the specificity of this place and that reflect the Park’s complex, evolving identity.

Art that heals, and protects. In Urban Omnibus, writer Jessica Angima follows Socrates alum Guadalupe Maravilla (@guadalupe__maravilla), whose 2021 exhibition Planeta Abuelx filled the Park with his Disease Throwers: sculptural "healing machines" built from cotton, loofah, palm leaves, and objects gathered along his own migration route, each crowned with a gong.
Today that same practice has grown beyond the gallery: sound baths for undocumented neighbors, mutual aid, and quiet watch outside a Brooklyn church so its congregation can worship without fear. "Challenging experiences become our greatest teachers," he says.
Stories like his are exactly why we`re building The Point Digital Archives and Oral History Project, the first public record of the artists and community who built Socrates.

Socrates’ new website is here!
Following a major investment to digitize our 40-year archive, Socrates Sculpture Park’s history is now more accessible than ever through our newly redesigned website.
Designed by KUDOS, the new site marks an important milestone in our commitment to preserving and sharing a vital part of Queens history. For the first time, our community can explore four decades of Socrates from the inside out, searching an expansive archive by year, exhibition, artist, and theme.
The website brings this history into conversation with Socrates today, from our ongoing Oral History Project with community members and alumni artists to The Point, a new initiative at the Park’s southern tip that will connect visitors more deeply with Socrates’ layered history. Together, these projects offer new ways to encounter Socrates’ legacy of artistic experimentation, land stewardship, and collective memory.

Socrates Sculpture Park mourns the passing of Gordon J. Davis, a pioneering attorney and civic leader who served as New York City’s first Black Parks Commissioner.
Gordon was essential to the process of making Socrates into NYC parkland. Working alongside his colleague Liz Berger, he helped protect the site from development. We are deeply grateful to Gordon and to Liz, whose wisdom and advocacy were invaluable to this effort.
Socrates would not be here today without Gordon’s commitment to public space and the cultural life of New York City. His legacy lives on in the Park he helped make possible.

This Saturday, Socrates Sculpture Park and @rooftopfilms come together for the second night of Outdoor Cinema, featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, the new documentary offering a demystified look at Basquiat’s legacy through untold memories from his family, never-before-seen works, and rare archival imagery.
Before the screening, serpentwithfeet will perform an ambient set drawing on the sounds and creative energy of downtown New York. We are thrilled to be able to screen serpent`s recent video "sentinel" in collaboration with @fern_presents.
Basquiat’s life and work embody a distinctly New York spirit of experimentation, cultural exchange, and creative possibility. That spirit is central to Outdoor Cinema at Socrates, where film, food, and music create space to gather around the cultures, histories, and creative communities that shape New York.
Get ready for a night of cinema under the stars! ✨

Homecoming, Chapter four: Sanford Biggers (@sanfordbiggers)
For the last four decades, Socrates Sculpture Park has served as a site for artistic discovery. Beyond offering solely a platform to early career artists through its annual fellowship program, Socrates provides artists the necessary resources and mentorship for true experimentation.
This summer, in celebration of the Park’s 40th anniversary and as part of our Homecoming Series, we welcome back Artist Fellow alumnus Sanford Biggers, whose “Unsui” installation is on view through June 2027.
As part of Socrates’ ongoing Oral History Project, Sanford Biggers shares some thoughts on Socrates and what the Park means to him: "What Socrates offers is an opportunity for an artist to think outside of the white cube, outside of the confines of an institution, or maybe even the context of a museum or a foundation, or a gallery. It`s for an artist who wants to exist beyond those boundaries, and to try things that might be a little uncomfortable if they were to be in some of those other contexts.”
The Homecoming video series is part of Socrates` Oral History Project, where for the first time in our four-decade history, we`re building a public record of the people who imagined, built, and transformed Socrates from a riverside landfill into a home for art and public life. The Park`s Oral History Project and expanded Digital Archive are now live and accessible through our newly redesigned website. Visit the link in our bio for more!
