‘SWORD IN THE SPHINX’ & ‘CUT COPY SPHINX’


BIO

Virginia Lee Montgomery (b. Houston, TX in 1986; works in Texas and New York) received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008 and MFA from Yale University in 2016. She is a hybrid artist and works primarily with video, performance, sound, and sculpture. Her artwork is latently autobiographical and surreal, often with a feminist impulse.

Montgomery’s works have been presented in solo shows at Plymouth Rock, Zürich, Switzerland (2017), MEYOHAS, New York, NY (2016), and Texas Natural Sciences Museum, Austin, TX (2008). Her works have also been exhibited in group shows throughout the country and internationally such as AN UNBOUND KNOT IN THE WIND, Hessel Museum of Art, Hudson, NY (2018), In Practice: Material Deviance, Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY (2017), and BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS, Art Gallery of Guelph, Guelph, Canada (2016), among others.

Programming

1. In February 2019, Socrates partnered with Times Square Arts to present Montgomery’s video project ‘HONEY MOON‘ in Times Square as part of the Midnight Moment exhibition series.

2. ‘CUT COPY SPHINX’ has been screened at venues including The New Museum, The New York Independent Film Festival, The Ann Arbor Film Festival, and The New Orleans Film Society.

3 ‘SWORD IN THE SPHINX’ appeared in the 2019 exhibition ‘An Unbound Knot in the Wind’ at Ramapo College.
