Gainer’s sculpture was inspired in part by Micheal Snow’s project “Walking Woman,” Robert Cappa’s war photography, Colin Powell’s speech to the UN, classic Greek figurative sculpture, and the pose from the Patterson-Gimlin film footage that purportedly documents Bigfoot. Created during the US war in Iraq, the sculpture, and the cognitive dissonance referred to in the title, offers a rumination on photography and its use in manipulating public perception. If the viewer isn’t paying attention to the details re-cognition assumes false equivalencies.
