Mohawk, 1993Plaster, concrete, steel, wood124" × 38" × 40"

Mohawk is the largest in a series of pieces I began at the Triangle Artist’s Workshop in 1989. They’re made primarily of plaster, steel, and wood. My process has been to construct a steel or wood framework and cast, pour, or trowel plaster over it. Then I cut back into the surface to reveal some of the structure beneath. When the piece has achieved a sense of presence and balance, it’s finished.

I made the armature for this piece at Sculpture Space in Utica, N.Y., with support from Sculpture Space and Union College.
