Sequence, 1993Granite60" × 12" × 4"

Sequence is a monument for those with AIDS, for remembrance and also for hope. In each stele, healthy cell growth (mitosis) is ongoing in the upper part, while an ancient encrypted code (ogham) is inscribed at the bottom, symbolizing that which we do not know, but exists. The code for the cure to AIDS is similarly unknown at this time. Sequence seeks to act as a conduit for the power of these basic archetypes and as mediator between the past and the present, contrasting our extreme lack of symbolic healing to the richness of our predecessors.
