Gallery Garden (Jasper Johns), 2008Reclaimed drywall and wood from art galleries, soil, plantsApprox. 12' × 12' × 4'

The artist re-purposes walls from galleries and art fairs to create a multi-level planter for native grasses and flowers, while providing an area for seating. The walls’ previous statuses are challenged both physically and conceptually as they are brought out of their pristine spaces into nature. The artist addresses the constant discarding of building materials with changing exhibitions by creatively recycling material such as drywall; gypsum from drywall can be used alternatively as garden soil supplement.
