Socrates x Recess Field Guide: Ancestral Rhythms of the Harvest

Ritual Cycles of Grief, Gratitude, and Reaping
Harvest is a moment of gratitude, where we gather what we’ve sown.
We thank the earth for its abundance–
We offer scent, smoke, and movement–
To honor the cyclical nature of sowing – reaping – resting – grieving.
In this moment of transition, we are exiting pandemic lockdowns without clear social changes. We ask, what have we sown this harvest? What are we doing to process the racial uprisings, lost lives, and moments of joy during this year? How do we maintain personal and cultural responsibility around shared equality to make it a reality?
Ancestral Rhythms of the Harvest is a series of collective responses in the form of workshops around care, organized by artists Smita Sen, Anaïs Duplan, D Rosen, and Marcela Torres with Recess. Each program pairs artistic practices and sensory research to offer ritual practices to the public. The programs will explore themes of presence, grieving, and memory beyond human worlds. Ancestral Rhythms of the Harvest will use sensorial aspects of scent and music as methods for working with generational trauma. As a collective, we have combined our efforts to honor the harvest, offer a bouquet of movement practices, and create dynamic sensorial objects to be shared through ritual action.
