A robust offering of artist-driven public programming and opportunities for visitor engagement accompany the exhibition in acknowledgement of how monuments are shaped not just by their creator but also by the public.<\/p>\n<h4>1) \u2018MONUMENTS NOW: Jeffrey Gibson, Paul Ram\u00edrez Jonas, Xaviera Simmons\u2019<br\/>\n<del>Opens May 16<br\/>\n<\/del>Opens Summer 2020<\/h4>\n<p>New commissions for contemporary monuments by <a href=\"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/el\/artist\/jeffrey-gibson\/\">\u03a4\u03b6\u03ad\u03c6\u03c1\u03b9 \u03a4\u03b6\u03ad\u03b9\u03bc\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/el\/artist\/paul-ramirez-jonas\/\">\u03a0\u03b1\u03cd\u03bb\u03bf\u03c2 \u03a1\u03b1\u03bc\u03af\u03c1\u03b5\u03b6 \u0393\u03b9\u03cc\u03bd\u03b1\u03c2<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/el\/artwork\/untitled-simmons\/\">\u039e\u03b1\u03b2\u03b9\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1 \u03a3\u03af\u03bc\u03bf\u03bd\u03c2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>2) \u2018MONUMENTS NOW: Call and Response\u2019<br\/>\n<del>Opens September 12<br\/>\n<\/del>Opens October 10, 2020<\/h4>\n<p>The Artist Fellows\u2019 projects for \u2018Call and Response\u2019 take various archetypal monumental forms such as the arch or the column and dedicate them to underrepresented peoples and histories \u2013 from the civil servants who deliver fresh drinking water to the everyday struggle for self-determination by the country\u2019s descendants of chattel slavery.<\/p>\n<p>What unites these various approaches is a focus on collective agency and power, departing from the hero narrative of traditional monuments. Much of the works\u2019 impact relies on public participation and reception by actively inviting visitors to take part in creating the meaning of the monument.<\/p>\n<h4>3) \u2018MONUMENTS NOW: The Next Generation\u2019<br\/>\nOpens October 10<\/h4>\n<p>A monument and accompanying \u2018zine collectively realized by local high school students.<\/p>\n<h3>Support<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018MONUMENTS NOW\u2019 is organized by Socrates Sculpture Park and curated by Jess Wilcox, Curator &amp; Director of Exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>It is made possible with generous support from the Ford Foundation, VIA Art Fund, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, The Lily Auchincloss Foundation, The Milton &amp; Sally Avery Arts Foundation, The Cowles Charitable Trust, The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowships and the Shelley &amp; Donald Rubin Foundation. The Park has exhibited more than 1,000 artists on its five waterfront acres, providing them financial and material resources and outdoor studio facilities to create large-scale artworks on site. Socrates is free and open to the public 365 days a year from 9am to sunset.
