Guelaguetza with Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York
Sunday, July 30th
It’s Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York (BFMNY)‘s 11th Annual Guelaguetza Festival and that’s something to celebrate! The term guelaguetza is a Zapotec word meaning “offering” or also “reciprocal exchange of gifts and services” and we’re excited to take part.
This summer celebration originated on Oaxaca City, Mexico, where representatives of the eight regions of Oaxaca gather together wearing traditional costumes to dance, sing, and give gifts to the crowd; creating strong bonds between the different regions. Each region offers a unique contribution to the festivities – like the much-loved “Dance of the Pineapple!” BFMNY has been sharing their passion for Mexican cultural heritage and tradition with New Yorkers for over 35 years.
