‘The 2019 Socrates Annual’ Exhibition Opening

Saturday, October 5 • 4 – 6pm • Free!

Join us in celebrating the opening of ‘The 2019 Socrates Annual‘ exhibition featuring projects by our 2019 Socrates Annual Fellows:

Jesus Benavente, Tecumseh Ceaser (Native Tec), Martina Onyemaechi Crouch-Anyarogbu (MOCA), Rachelle Dang, Chris Domenick, Hadi Fallahpisheh, Jes Fan, Hadrien Gérenton & Loup Sarion, Paul Kopkau, Alva Mooses, Marius Ritiu, Martin Roth, Gabriela Salazar, Lucia Thomé, Workers Art Coalition (WAC)

The festivities include a short dance performance programmed by artist Alva Mooses for her piece, ‘Se entra bailando.’ Performed by Sandra Sotto, the dance performance is based on the ‘Danza de los Viejitos’ (Dance of the Little Old Men) from the Purépecha region in Mexico. The dance is traditionally performed by four male danzantes representing fire, water, earth, and air as well as the four colors that make corn: red, yellow, white, and blue. ‘Danza de los Viejitos’ originated in pre-Hispanic times with the Purépecha indigenous group from Michoacán and was meant to honor the ‘Old God.’ After colonization by Spain, the dance became a parody of old Spanish men.

Delicious Colombian food will be available for purchase during the opening from vendor, My Carretta!
