The performances were produced as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/zh\/exhibition\/jeffrey-gibson\/\">Gibson<\/a>\u2019s monument project \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/zh\/exhibition\/jeffrey-gibson\/\">Because Once You Enter My House It Becomes Our House<\/a>,\u2019 on view as part of the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/socratessculpturepark.org\/zh\/monuments-now\/\">MONUMENTS NOW<\/a>\u2018 exhibition at Socrates through March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Because Once You Enter My House It Becomes Our House\u2019 is a massive kaleidoscopically-patterned ziggurat honoring Queer and Indigenous peoples. \u201cThe monument is meant to highlight multiple aspects of Indigenous creativity in an effort to decentralize singular representations that monuments historically celebrate,\u201d said Gibson. \u201cI knew immediately that I wanted to work with Laura, Emily, and Raven on programming,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey are all established artists in their own right, and I have so much respect for how they each use process-based work to extend cultural philosophies in new ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acclaimed violinist Laura Ortman drew inspiration from Socrates\u2019 location on the East River as well as the historic Cahokia mounds, which Gibson modeled his monument after, for an improvised performance atop the ziggurat. \u201cLaura\u2019s music places me presently in a specific location by waking up my senses,\u201d described Gibson. \u201cIt\u2019s like watching a meteor shower move through the galaxy, but hearing it instead of seeing it.\u201d Ortman, who is White Mountain Apache, has performed internationally, including at the <a href=\"https:\/\/whitney.org\/?catype=general&amp;catword=whitney%20museum&amp;creativeid=461833479317&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA_9r_BRBZEiwAHZ_v1_orrK40k0h0L3jCDL3D803jxWZjmwtU_T0DhEcpDk1xQu3dA_1gLBoC_5wQAvD_BwE\">Whitney Museum of American Art<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/\">Museum of Modern Art<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrepompidou.fr\/en\/\">Centre Pompidou<\/a>. Her piece at Socrates \u2013 and a powerful Land Acknowledgment by the <a href=\"https:\/\/indigenouskinshipcollective.com\/\">Indigenous Kinship Collective<\/a> \u2013 were captured in a high-production value documentary film premiering online February 3, 2021 at 6PM eastern time via <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/OrtmanPremiere\">bit.ly\/OrtmanPremiere<\/a>. Performers wore garments and masks designed by Gibson who said: \u201cEmily\u2019s performance is fully sensory storytelling that connected her ancestral background to her experience arriving at and living in New York City.\u201d Johnson, who is of the Yup\u2019ik Nation, has performed and presented work internationally, including at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santafeopera.org\/\">Santa Fe Opera<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/newyorklivearts.org\/\">New York Live Arts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/massmoca.org\/\">MASS MoCA<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artshouse.com.au\/ourprograms\/yirramboi-festival\/\">ArtsHouse\/Yirramboi Festival<\/a>. Chacon, who is Din\u00e9, has exhibited or performed at venues including the <a href=\"https:\/\/whitney.org\/exhibitions\/the-biennial\">Whitney Biennial<\/a> \u548c <a href=\"https:\/\/macm.org\/en\/\">Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art Contemporain de Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, and received honors like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedstatesartists.org\/award\/\">United States Artists Fellowship in Music<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanacademy.de\/the-2020-21-class-of-berlin-prize-fellows\/\">American Academy\u2019s Berlin Prize for Music Composition<\/a>. His performance at the Park with Gibson will also be documented in a high-production-value film to be released online in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The series of performance video premieres will be accompanied by two virtual live-stream conversations.
